About This Spot
Take-off by the gate on top is the best place as the better house thermal is out in front of here.
Some of the strongest thermals in ireland here.
There are two regular thermals here.
1. from the farmers shed in the middle of the bowl
2. from the trees south of the house, below the top gate.
other thermals too in front of the gulley when flying in a southeast wind.
There is a nice XC to the southwest and south along the ridge, eventually ending up at Gougane Barra lake and church.
Thermal no.2 has taken pilots to 6000ft and above on good sunny days.
Even when cloudy this site works very nicely and the house thermal is almost always there.
The site has also been flow a few times on a dark cloudy day with westerly wind and a surprisingly good flight was had each time, always reaching the low cloudbase. Take-off from the top gate for this.
Takeoff altitude: 438m

Access Notes
from Ballingeary take the road north for 4km, (direction Macroom) to the Pass between the hills. At the Pass take a left hand turn and follow the signs west for Coom or Kenmare. Follow this road for about 2-3km and take the dirt road up the hill to the left (there is only one road up to the left). On the way up leave all the gates as you find them (usually closed). Follow up the track for 2km until you get to the top area. Note you cannot see the flying site until you are on the very top of the hill. When leaving close all gates.
